The City Form Lab hosted an event at SUTD December 10, 2014 to share experiences and lessons learned from the phase one implementation of the City Planning Lab initiative. Three presentations were followed by a panel discussion.

Indonesia City Planning Lab Initiative: what have we learned in the first year?The Indonesia City Planning Lab (CPL) initiative is envisioned as the driver of improved integrated and evidence-based spatial, development and investment planning, helping cities achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth. This initiative is a part of the World Bank National Urban Development Program (P3N), engaging directly with local governments, targeting large and medium cities and metropolitan areas with populations over 500,000, through investments in transformative infrastructure and technical and institutional capacity. The focus of the CPL facilities is to build up technical and institutional capacity in city planning and regulatory agencies to produce reliable and up-to-date data about their cities, well-informed plans, effective public investments, and to support the enforcement of development regulations. CPL is envisioned as a permanent planning and urban analysis support facility within the municipal planning department. By acting as a single ‘nerve center’ or focal point for analytical work across a range of sectors such as spatial growth, land use, land markets, slums, and economic competitiveness, the CPL will help to habituate city leaders to thinking about urban management in an integrated, holistic way, allowing them to meet a range of needs through select but strategic interventions.

Participatory Planning Workshops in Rapidly Developing Urban Contexts: Denpasar, A Case Study As part of the CPL initiative, SUTD in partnership with the World Bank held a participatory workshop focused on helping local municipal officials to envision the role of data and analytics in addressing slum settlement housing concerns in Denpasar, Indonesia. Similar intensive three-day participatory engagements around focused urban planning topics have also been held in other CPL cities. This presentation highlights the challenges and opportunities for introducing and integrating data-driven tools and technologies to leadership communities in rapidly developing urban environments.
Speaker 3: Onur Ekmekci, researcher at the SUTD City Form Lab. "Transit Oriented Development and Pedestrian Oriented Design for the Surabaya Tram Corridor".

Transit Oriented Development and Pedestrian Oriented Design for the Surabaya Tram Corridor The city government of Surabaya is planning to build a first mass rapid transit tram line through its downtown. Over the past year, the SUTD City Form Lab, in partnership with the World Bank, the City Government of Surabaya and Hansen Partnership, has been developing a transit-oriented development and pedestrian-oriented design strategy for the built environment surrounding this important MRT corridor. This presentation describes what has been done to date and discusses the challenges and opportunities of transit oriented urban design and development in Surabaya today.
